So what is there to do near Downderry?

Whitsand Bay, in the south east of Cornwall, is recognisable for its lengthy sandy beaches and sweeping cliffs. With four miles of sheltered beaches running to Rame Head, and a rugged cliff-lined coast – Whitsand Bay holidays are perfect for those who love to enjoy the great outdoors.

Nearby Downderry is a small quiet village with its own sandy beach, which is a great base to explore this beautiful area. Whitsand Bay and Downderry holiday cottages offer a Cornish escape in picturesque surroundings.

Whitsand Bay is a great spot for fishing, and is popular with both sea and beach anglers. The Bay is also perfect for those who enjoy rambling, especially as the South West Coast Path runs through the bay connecting the Rame Peninsula and Looe.

As well as the Coast Path, the Whitsand and Downderry area offers a variety of different walks. Activities for children; top quality beaches, rock-pooling, the Looe and Tamar historic railway line, the monkey sanctuary animal park and a little further afield the Eden Project.

Downderry is a small ex fishing village, but it has all the amenities you need, The Inn on the Shore pub overlooking the sea, a post office and well stocked shop and a restaurant, The Conch renowned for its excellent food and great service.

The beach is a mix of sand and shingle and is great for relaxing or exploring and has achieved the highest cleanliness rating for the last 15 years. For those with children the rock pools are fantastic, remember to put all your treasure safely back!

You can walk along the beach at low tide all the way to Shag Rock, a stunning beautiful walk which is usually very quiet, you may not even meet anyone!

Nearby is Seaton another small village which can be walked to easily along the beach in 10 minutes from Downderry. It has two pubs & a cafe overlooking the sea, with great outdoor seating to watch the waves whilst enjoying hot chocolate and reading the paper – maybe even a portion of cheesy chips! Seaton has a country park which includes a childrens playpark, adults outdoor gym and nature trails up the valley. It is a lovely flat walk up to the top of the valley where you can stop at the Copley Arms for lunch before strolling back down.

There are many attractions in the area that are great for all the family, a for example The Monkey Sanctuary (10 mins), Looe (10 mins) Polperro (20 mins), the Eden Project (45 minutes), Fowey (30 mins).

For the keen golfer the Whitsand Bay Golf Club, Looe Golf Club, and the St Mellion Championship Course are all nearby.

Getting around

Downderry is located on the South East Coast of Cornwall and is easily accessed by car.
There is room for 1 car at The Cottage – off street parking in a garage 4.8m long.

Flights into Exeter and Bristol are all within easy travelling distance as are the ferries from France/Spain which arrive in Plymouth.
Hire Car companies are located at airports and also in Plymouth.
The nearest train station are St Germans and Liskeard.
